Erik is weary of the public eye on him. Once Hanukkah and the holidays pass -- once the new year arrives -- he finds he is reluctant to venture out into the snowy domain in the old clothes. He has appropriated a chess set from one of the more public areas of their new lodgings and brought it to Charles' room, wordlessly setting it up in the drawing area and taking the opposite seat. He does not think he need explain what they are doing.

Given the air between them lately, Erik wonders if this will be enough to calm the frosty tides. Perhaps if the state of their disagreement over goals and beliefs was not so divided, this would be easier. Still, as he aligns the pawns in their positions, he believes this to be the best start.

As time passes, he begins to find sleep more easily, though his appetite still evades him on the majority of days. It is as he hates to admit -- he has found no peace; only further grief.
